I cleaned up my grandma’s kitchen and snapped a few new pictures of the old menus she has up as wallpaper. Some real gems in there, from decades firmly in the rear view.

What I wouldn’t give to be able to buy a good cut of steak, pitcher of wine and tip generously... For under $10.

Speaking of my grandma, earlier this week she came outside from an exercise class to find her taillight busted . S he took the Prius to a Japanese car specialist in Bellevue, and can you guess how much they charged her to fix the cracked light ?

Wrong.

They told her to buy some clear packing tape, and they’d cover up the cracks for her, free of charge . Considering how beat the car is (her driving skills have not been kind to the 70,000 mile Toyota) buying a new taillight would have been a bit rediculous.

She’s been using thi s shop ever since my grandpa died, and I’ve always been a bit worried that they might try taking advantage of the 90+ year old lady who knows nothing about cars. Glad to see that’s apparently not the case.

Awww. Good on that shop.

Those menus are fantastic, I’m working on a project on an old hotel right now that once had a pretty locally well-known restaurant. I was trying to find more info on the restaurant out of personal curiosity and the internet isn’t helping at all. I should’ve spent more time poking around the antique shops in town.

And a pitcher of wine sounds great right now.

For a more lasting “fix, ” you might pick up some leading edge tape to replace the clear packing tape. We use it in the racecar world to “tape” lights, as well as some folks will use it to protect certain areas of paint from rock chips thrown up by leading cars and/or sticky tires . It’s actually designed to be exposed to UV radiation. Packing tape doesn’t stand up to UV radiation for very long, and then you’re left with a hard residue of dried adhesive that isn’t fun to remove.

If either exist, you might want to try the local public library and or historical society.  If there was a local paper, there's a decent chance they'll have microfilm or the original of them and you might at least be able to find ads or write ups about them..

Yeah, it’s 3 hours away but it’s possible that the Denver library might have some info too. Maybe I’ll swing by the main branch next week!

very cool, (both the old restaurant stuff and Gma’s tail light fix.) Spent a few birthdays at that OSF... though I never was a fan of the spumoni ice cream...
